Tips on Wedding Reception Beverages

It's a once in a lifetime event, we hope. A wedding could be one of the most important occasions in your lifetime. Because of that, people are willing to shell out thousands of dollars to get it right.

Here are some tips on selecting the correct beverages to serve at that grand event.

You'll probably want to serve wine. Professional wedding planners advocate serving equal amounts of red and white wine . Here are some wine tips.

  • What to serve? Start by Wine Tasting -- Set up a wine tasting with friends, family or those helping you plan your event. You can get expert advice from a local wine store or your caterer.

  • Seek out advice -- Contact your local wine shop. Many shops will offer you excellent advice and discounts if you purchase several cases.

  • Personalized Wine Labels for your event. --It's a nice touch and there are wine companies who willoffer their wines printed with custom personalized wine labels.

  • How much to buy? -- Some say that a good rule is 1/2 red and 1/2 white, although people tend to agree that more red will be drunk. One bottle serves only about 5 glasses of wine and you should plan that people will have a minimum of 2 glasses. It is always better to have more than too little wedding wine. Some shops will allow returns of unopened cases if you arrange it with them ahead of time. Otherwise you’ll have plenty of wine for months to come or for gifts.
Other Beverages

  • Having a bar? Serve iquors at the beginning of the evening and then serve call bar, or less prestigious, liquors the rest of the night. Talk to the caterer or event planner about a possible open bar time and a cash bar with open wine or or other possibilities.

  • You can save a few bucks by limiting the menu of drinks. Try offering only a few top-shelf liquors such as vodka, gin, and rum, and only a few selections of white and red wines.

  • Put a restriction on the types of mixed drinks your bartender will prepare. Print up a list of drinks the bartender will make, such as martinis, gin and tonics, and the like.
  • Be sure to offer a wide supply of nonalcoholic drinks.
